Following apple, Samsung, Huawei soon Xiaomi to use their own processor as the report says. The Wall Street Journal said Xiaomi’s processor is dubbed “Pinecone” and may launch as soon as next month under a Xiaomi subsidiary named “Beijing Pinecone Electronics.”
It’s not clear that Xiaomi is capable of making high-performance processors competing with the best Exynos, Kirin and AX chips developed by Samsung, Huawei and Apple, or if it’s trying to develop a low-power and an affordable chip. I think it might try to do both at some point.
Xiaomi uses Qualcomm processors in some of its smartphones and MediaTek too, but they want to shift away from Qualcomm for several reasons. The first reason is that Samsung has reportedly prepared up all of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 orders, leaving other companies scrambling or deploying older Snapdragon 821 chips. LG and HTC have had to do that, for like, with the LG G6 expected to come with the Snapdragon 821 and the HTC U Ultra already confirmed to do have it.
If Xiaomi sees these things become a regular trend, they can avoid this issue by developing their own chips
It will save Xiaomi money, too. The company is known and popular for selling mid-range handsets, and when it started developing its own processors could allow it to increase the profit margins on every phone sold.
