Instagram Suffered Data Breach, Hacker Gained High-Profiles Contact Information

Instagram has revealed that it has suffered from serious data breach and the hacker has gained access to the phone number and email addresses of the high-profile verified users.

The Facebook-owned social network has emailed its verified member’s high profiles figures about the breach and told them to take necessary precautions.

A bug in Instagram helped the hacker in gaining access to some high profiles figures profile data, including email, phone numbers.

The company in a statement, “We recently discovered that one or more individuals obtained unlawful access to a number of high-profile Instagram users’ contact information—specifically email address and phone number—by exploiting a bug in an Instagram API,”. “No account passwords were exposed. We fixed the bug swiftly and are running a thorough investigation.”

The vulnerability actually resides in Instagram’s application programming interface (API). The company did not reveal any details of the API vulnerability.

The company said passwords had not been stolen but warned users to watch for suspicious activity on their accounts.

The vulnerability is now fixed and the security team is looking into the incident.

Recently, An unknown hacker hijacked Selena Gomez official Instagram account and posted 3 nude pics of Justin Bieber. However, Instagram did not mention if the recent data breach was related to hacked Selena Gomez account.

Instagram warned its verified users to be cautioned as the hacker can take further steps to gain access to their accounts and also cautioned about the unexpected phone calls, texts, and emails. Avoid clicking any suspicious emails, links or attachment without verifying the source.

Instagram users are highly recommended to enable two-step verification on their account. And change their passwords with a lengthy complicated password, consisting of an upper case, lower case, special character, and numbers.

Instagram has more than 500 million users worldwide, some 300 million of which use it once a day.
